Maine Medical Center in Portland will begin admitting patients to its new 300,000-square-foot Malone Family Tower on June 9. The eight-story facility, the final phase of MMC’s extensive expansion and modernization project, primarily serves cardiac and cardiovascular patients.

The tower includes 96 private rooms, 10 operating rooms, nine procedure rooms, and 40 pre- and post-procedure beds. A new 20,000-square-foot sterile processing department will support all operating and procedure rooms at MMC. The tower is designed with ample space for patient and visitor comfort, as well as areas for multidisciplinary collaboration among care team members.

The $378 million project was funded through a combination of reserves, operating revenues, grants, bonds, and community donations. Notably, a $25 million donation from John and Leslie Malone was the largest single gift in MMC’s history.

“The Malone Family Tower is a much-needed investment in our patients, our care team, and our entire region,” said MaineHealth southern region president Britt Crewse. “This modern clinical care space will enhance our ability to serve Maine’s most acutely ill patients with top-quality care.”

The new tower addresses the region’s growing demand for cardiac and cardiovascular care, providing 32 additional ICU-level beds, which increases MMC’s ICU bed capacity to over 100. The state-of-the-art facility aims to support MMC’s cardiovascular team, which performs the highest number of cardiac and cardiovascular procedures in Maine.

“MMC’s cardiovascular team provides extraordinary care, and the Malone Family Tower matches that high standard,” said Dr. Joel Botler, CMO of MaineHealth southern region. “This new facility enables us to meet the current and future needs of our patients.”

The building also emphasizes sustainability, being designed for LEED Silver Certification with features such as recycled construction materials and a green roof to reduce water runoff and heat retention.

The tower’s completion marks the end of MMC’s expansion and modernization project, which began in 2018. This project also included expanding the patient and visitor parking garage, adding two floors and a heliport to the Coulombe Family Tower, building a new parking garage for the care team, and constructing a specialty care medical office building on MMC’s Scarborough campus.
